Scottish Highland Roads

Scottish Highland Roads. General George Wade (1673-1748) was already a distinguished soldier when he was commissioned to construct a system of stone bridges and metal roads in the Highlands of Scotland, Wade's name would probably be forgotten by now had his reputation rested on military deeds alone. He is remembered by the following couplet:
'Had you seen these roads before they were made,
You would lift up your hands and bless General Wade.'
