Scottish Vernacular Furniture

Scottish Vernacular Furniture. The most complete and authoritative study available of regional furniture design and use in Scotland. Part of the appeal of vernacular furniture is that in order to understand it one must look closely at social history and lifestyles that are at some levels primitive and at others surprisingly sophisticated. If not always high art, vernacular furniture proves beyond question that limited resources need not exclude aesthetic quality, nor need the functional imperative exclude beauty and charm. To appreciate some Scottish vernacular furniture we have to enter with sympathy into the world of crofters in a bleak landscape up to two hundred years ago, a world that has ceased to exist. Other Scottish pieces come from a setting of prosperous Lowland comfort. In writing this book, Bernard Cotton investigated museums and libraries; but whenever possible he and his wife Gerry made it a priority to see pieces in their contexts, to meet the people who used them, and to understand how they were made. The story of their quest is itself an adventure, and the objects he photographed often represent the life and death of a community, the vital relics of a vanished culture. Over the years Scots set up home in widely scattered places throughout the world, and furniture of the various types examined in this book can be found today in North America, Australia, and New Zealand. Scottish West Port

Scottish West Port. An old view of the West Port, St Andrews, Fife, Scotland. This is one of the few surviving examples of a city gate in Scotland. Its building contract is dated 18th May, 1589. The Port was completely renovated in 1843 when some structural alterations were made. It now consists of a central archway protected from above by battling between two semi-octagonal turrets with gun-loops. On either side across the pavements is an arch of modern construction. Located across the west end of South Street, St. Andrews.

Scottish Poems from the Wells and Springs of Scotland

The Spring Teller. Scottish Poems from the Wells and Springs of Scotland. Every spring has its own song - from potent legendary wells to inspiring new sources. Listening to the voice of each one, world renowned poet Valerie Gillies composed a new poem to fit. The Spring Teller records the author's remarkable journey across Scotland, which took over three years and included visits to over a hundred springs. Each thought provoking poem mirrors the flow of the water, from still wells locked in the inner city to the free-flowing springs of mountain or glen. In ten sections Gillies' poetry captures the mineral properties of these springs and explores them as sites of healing and cleansing, as places of pilgrimage and modern meetings, of connection between human and nature and, through her own form of poetic environmental activism, expresses how we should preserve these natural wonders."The Spring Teller" contains an intriguing introduction, landmark poems and a new map to help the reader visit these memorable places, while the photographs show the beauty of each spring. This book is a unique guide to the locations of springs in Scotland, their history and folklore and an exploration of their mysterious properties.
