Scottish Youth Choir St Andrew's Day Scotland

A Scottish youth choir performing on St Andrew's Day in the Wellgate Centre, Dundee, Scotland. The Scots Wha Hae lyrics were written by Robert Burns in 1793, in the form of a speech given by Robert the Bruce before the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, where Scotland maintained its independence from England.

Original lyrics for Scot Wha Hae in Scots.

Scots, wha hae wi' Wallace bled,
Scots, wham Bruce has aften led,
Welcome tae your gory bed,
Or tae Victorie!

Now's the day, and now's the hour:
See the front o' battle lour,
See approach proud Edward's power,
Chains and Slaverie!

Wha will be a traitor knave?
Wha will fill a coward's grave?
Wha sae base as be a slave?
Let him turn and flee!

Wha, for Scotland's king and law,
Freedom's sword will strongly draw,
Freeman stand, or Freeman fa',
Let him on wi' me!

By Oppression's woes and pains!
By your sons in servile chains!
We will drain our dearest veins,
But they shall be free!

Lay the proud usurpers low!
Tyrants fall in every foe!
Liberty's in every blow!
Let us do or dee!'

Scots Wha Hae English lyrics.

Scots, who have with Wallace bled,
Scots, whom Bruce has often led,
Welcome to your gory bed.
Or to victory!

Now is the day, and now is the hour:
See the front of battle lower (threaten),
See approach proud Edward's power.
Chains and slavery!

Who will be a traitor knave?
Who will fill a coward's grave?
Who's so base as be a slave?
Let him turn, and flee!

Who for Scotland's King and Law.
Freedom's sword will strongly draw,
Freeman stand or freeman fall,
Let him follow me!

By oppression's woes and pains,
By your sons in servile chains,
We will drain our dearest veins.
But they shall be free!

Lay the proud usurpers low!
Tyrants fall in every foe!
Liberty is in every blow!
Let us do or die!'

Scottish Grannie

My grannie was weel kent to be no' canny. She had ways of doin' things and kennin' things that naebody could mak oot. At last she deeit, and she behoved to be buryit i' the Barr, that's a village on the ither side o' the hills, laigh doon by the Stinchar. When the funeral day cam', we carryit the coffin up the steep road, and when we were gettin' near the tap, and hadna mickle breath left, for the coffin was nae licht wecht, a fine-lookin' gentleman, ridin' a fine black horse, made up to us. Nane o' us kennt him or had seen him afore. But he rade alangside o' us, and cracked awa' maist croosely, and cheered us sae that we gaed scrievin' doon the brae on the ither side. Weel, you may jalouse we were a wee bit forfeuchen when we cam' to the kirkyard, and some o' us thocht we wadna be the waur o' bit drappie afore we gaed on wi' the buryin'. Sae we steppit into the public-hoose. Weel, ye mauna think we bydeit lang there, but losh me! when we cam' oot the coffin wi' my grannie in't was awa', and sae was the man an' the black horse. And to this day I canna tell what cam' ower them.

Scottish Granny Porage Stories

Scottish Granny Porage Stories. Three illustrated stories to read aloud. Once upon a time, a long time ago, there was a wee cottage all by itself on an island. The island was on a small loch, up over the hill from the village by the shore. In this cottage there lived a little old woman, who was known to everyone as Granny Porage. So begins the stories of Granny Porage, set in a time in Scotland long before now. The Granny Porage Stories.

Scottish Globe Hotel

Scottish Globe Hotel. This interesting old hostelry, popularly called Burns Howff, is situated in the High Street, Dumfries, Scotland. It is located along a narrow close opposite Assembly Street. It was near the house of Robert Burns and was the tavern to which the Scottish Bard gave preference while he resided in the town. Many a jolly hour he spent there, as have, over the past hundred years, the members and friends of the Howff Club, in captivating surroundings and convivial company.

Scottish Pipers In Europe

Dear Sandy, I am researching something that I believe some, or at least one, Scottish piper in Europe in 1944-45 did to save the lives of several Allied soldiers when outmatched one foggy night in the area where UK and U.S. troops were occasionally lumped together. This, or these Scottish Bagpipers, played all night to eventually frighten a larger German unit off. Would you, or someone, know of someone, who might have knowledge of this incident in, probably, either December, or January of that time? Thanks very much, Mike McIlvain.

Scottish War Diaries

Scottish War Diaries. Tommy's War. A First World War Diary 1913-1918. The extraordinary diaries of Thomas Cairns Livingstone represent twenty years of gorgeously idiosyncratic daily records of a middle-class Glasgow household, over a period spanning shortly before the Great War to the early 1930s. Thomas Cairns Livingstone, a mercantile book keeper, began his diaries in 1913, when he, his wife Agnes and their son 'wee Tommy' set up house in the Glasgow neighbourhood of Govanhill. For the next twenty years, Livingstone dutifully recorded each day's events in his Collins diaries, from small domestic dramas to troop movements as news of the Great War filtered back to the anxious home front. Rescued during a house clearance, the intricate details of these journals, interspersed throughout with Livingstone's wonderfully warm and idiosyncratic illustrations, provide a priceless record of the impression world events were making on the ordinary people at home and an extraordinary chronicle of the ups and downs of working-class life in the period immediately before, during and after the First World War.The details of the family's early life, notes about the, usually dreich, Glasgow weather, and comments on the carnage on the front and on the high seas, are written and illustrated with such warmth and charm that the story of this very ordinary household in the early part of the 20th century becomes completely addictive. Scottish Herd Of Red Deer

A Herd of Red Deer revolutionised the way that British wildlife was studied. Darling spent two years with the red deer and this book describes in beautiful detail all that he learnt. From the excitement of the rutting season to the struggle for mastery of the herd, Darling is able to express the changes in the deer community throughout the year with a warmth and personality that few scientist have. As part of the Luath "Wild Lives" series the original text is complimented with diagrams, maps and new photographs. In the introduction Walter Stephen shows how "A Herd of Red Deer" inspired a generation to follow in Darling's footsteps, to love the Highlands and to be aware of the big environmental issues of the 21st century. This authoritative work on the lives and habits of the red deer, supported by Scottish Natural Heritage, will appeal to all those interested in wildlife and the environment.
