Scottish Snuff Mill

Scottish Snuff Mill. An old view of Watt's Snuff Mill which kept going until 1940 and it was said that Bonnie Prince Charlie once declared that Watt's snuff was the best he'd ever sniffed. If this is so, Watt must have exported it to the various resorts in Europe between which the dissolute wannabe was drunkenly and aimlessly drifting for Watt didn't start up his mill until 1763, well after the Young Pretender had gone into disappointed exile. It seems more likely that John Watt and his son Robert were astute businessmen, old and young pretenders of a different sort, implying a By Royal Appointment credit for their product. long the Juniper Green stretch of the Water of Leith there was a concentration of watermills: seven in Juniper Green proper, and at least ten in which Juniper folk would have worked.

The Ultimate Guide to Being Scottish

The Ultimate Guide to Being Scottish. What makes the Ultimate Scot? Is it the ability to identify a tartan pattern from 50 yards? Maybe it's being able to recite the two forgotten verses of Auld Lang Syne? Or perhaps it's knowing your single malt from a double malt? The Ultimate Guide to Being Scottish examines in hilarious detail the history, politics and traditions that make Scots great. Exploring the best of Scottish culture, this book focuses on the celebrations that Scots have made their own, from Hogmanay to the Edinburgh Fringe festival. Mixing fact and practical hints (like the ideal recipe for boiled sheep's head) with witty banter, The Ultimate Guide to Being Scottish is perfect for injecting Scotland's unique and beloved brand of merriment into the year. Clark McGinn was born in Ayr and has been the speaker at Burns Suppers and other events for thirty years. He has led the revelry at Suppers across Britain, Europe, Australia and the States, usually with a dram of whisky in hand. While at Glasgow University he founded the World Student Debating Competition and passed enough exams to become a banker, where his skills at arguing came in handy. His speeches have been shown on TV in Britain, America, Canada and Australia. The Ultimate Guide to Being Scottish: Put Your First Foot Forward.

Scottish Mill Lade

Scottish Mill Lade. An old view of the mill lade at Bridge of Allan, Stirlingshire, Scotland. In the 1830s it was said that Bridge of Allan consisted of old-fashioned mill and kiln, a wayside inn, a smithy and a few hovel-looking huts around a narrow humped-backed bridge. Due to success of the Spa, by 1868 there were over 100 lodging houses. The weir and mill lade can still be seen under the present day bridge.
