The second son of the fourth Earl of Selkirk. While attending Edinburgh University, Lord Daer lived with Professor Dugald Stewart, with whom he also stayed at the Professor's country home, Catrine, in Ayrshire. It was here that Robert Burns met him when he dined with Stewart on 23rd October 1786, the meeting being the poet's first with a member of the nobility. But Lord Daer was liberal minded. Later, through having friends in France who were concerned in the Revolution, Lord Daer became a warm admirer of it, and was a member of The Friends of the People and an advocate of Parliamentary reform.
