Seawolves. Pirates and the Scots. Seawolves is an exciting and thorough examination of Scots connected to piracy, whether they are victims or villains, real or literary. Concentrating mainly on the legendary golden age of pirates - 1690 to 1710 - when pirate vessels not only menaced the waters of the East and West Indies, but even threatened the northern islands of Scotland. During this time, many Scots left hard lives in places like Aberdeen, Stornoway and Orkney to find fame, fortune and adventure on the dangerous high seas of more exotic locations like Madagascar, Brazil or the Caribbean. Some, like Captain James Macrae from Ayr, became well-respected pirate hunters, champions of the law upon the ocean, bravely facing violent battles and unsavoury characters. Others, such as John Gow from Orkney, were these unsavoury characters, their dastardly deeds capturing the imagination of the Scottish public. This morbid fascination is reflected in the work of Scottish writers like Daniel Defoe and Robert Louis Stevenson, with novels such as Robinson Crusoe and Treasure Island, among others, cementing the glamour and notoriety of the pirate in the public mind. The Lighthouse Stevensons. This is Bella Bathurst's epic story of Robert Louis Stevenson's ancestors and the building of the Scottish coastal lighthouses against impossible odds. "Whenever I smell salt water, I know that I am not far from one of the works of my ancestors," wrote Robert Louis Stevenson in 1880. "When the lights come out at sundown along the shores of Scotland, I am proud to think they burn more brightly for the genius of my father!" Robert Louis Stevenson was the most famous of the Stevensons, but not by any means the most productive. The Lighthouse Stevensons, all four generations of them, built every lighthouse round Scotland, were responsible for a slew of inventions in both construction and optics, and achieved feats of engineering in conditions that would be forbidding even today. The same driven energy which Robert Louis Stevenson put into writing, his ancestors put into lighting the darkness of the seas. "The Lighthouse Stevensons" is a story of high endeavour, beautifully told; indeed, is was one of the most celebrated works of historical biography in recent memory. Shield of Empire. The Royal Navy and Scotland. The Royal Navy has always been seen as an English institution, despite a large Scottish contribution, from Admiral Duncan at Camperdown in 1797 to Andrew Cunningham in the Second World War. The Royal Navy's most dramatic effect on Scotland, aside from its role in the British Empire and European wars, was in suppressing the Jacobite campaigns from 1708 to 1746. This book breaks new ground in telling the stories of almost forgotten campaigns, such as the submarine war in the Firth of Forth in 1914-18. In two world wars, and since the 1960s, a large proportion of the Navy's power has been based in Scotland, from the Grand Fleet at Scapa Flow to Trident submarines at Faslane. Most British sailors of the Second World War had part of their training in Scotland, and the famous base at Tobermory was only one of many. Yet, the Navy never felt at home in Scotland. As one Scottish admiral put it, 'In both wars the Royal Navy flooded into Scotland to make use of our deep water ports and sea lochs for large-scale and safer anchorages. After each war the Navy unimaginatively retreated en masse to the Channel.' The book ends with a unique account of the setting up of the controversial missile bases in the Holy Loch and Gareloch.
